Vets Helping Vets

Updated: May 15

There was a time when the weight of the world felt insurmountable. The time when each day was a battle against shadows that no one else could see. As a combat veteran, I have known the challenges and sacrifices that come with wearing the uniform, the trials that test one’s spirit. To include the wives back home holding everything together..

Coming home seemed to be a dream.. Counting down the days to be back home, back home like it was before.. Over time finding oneself becoming distant. Going to the store, mall any public places became very hard. The feels, the emotions, it all comes back subconsciously.. Confusion quickly became frustration and anger. Coming home was absolutely not a dream it was a nightmare for 12 years..

Yet, in the midst of those struggles, I discovered a beacon of light in Vets Helping Vets. I reached out to the Combat Vets in March of 2023. Was able to attend the Center VFW chapter meeting. I got to meet everyone that day. I was so terrified to speak about myself. Especially in front of complete strangers. I had stood up explained who I was from my heart.. I remember not feeling like the world was collapsing around me.. I knew I found the place I was looking for. Not only to help myself but find others like me to help.

You all reminded me that every scar tells a story not of defeat, but of perseverance and triumph. Even though I did not have a big enough bike to join, I only had my permit. I was still welcomed to ride along for the first big event for our chapter 22-13. Riding with them, I found freedom on the open road. A place where the roar of the engine harmonized with my own heartbeat. In those moments I rediscovered my strength, purpose, and a profound connection that transcends ordinary bonds. Their camaraderie not only pushed me forward but also gave me the courage I was missing.

The collective spirit of veterans coming together that fuels our journey from darkness into light. The bonds formed in these communities have been a lifeline, turning challenges into victories and pain into power.

For every veteran struggling in silence, know this: you are never alone. With the support of Vets Helping Vets every road leads towards healing and hope. Keep riding, keep fighting, and never lose sight of the strength that lies within you. I only hope that every single one of you can experience the same satisfaction and true bliss by Vets Helping Vets.
